What are you teaching them?

The fact that there are so many memes about this shows how widespread the problem is.

Another day without using Pythagorean theorem, reads one.

Another jokes about a kid wanting to learn how to balance their finances and instead is taught

hot cross buns on the recorder.

Another has a totally unprepared adult repeating the one thing they learned in school.

Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.

Maybe you remember your own bafflement as a kid, bored out of your mind in classes you knew were not even remotely connected to real life.

Should we take solace that this is a timeless problem?

A Spartan king was once asked what a child should be taught, to which he replied, what they will also use when they become men. How badly we

fail at this, because we're busy, because we just go along with the curriculum, because it's easy to

measure trivia, memorization, and facts.

Understanding, wisdom, the ability to figure stuff out, ethics. These things are harder, but, you know,

they actually matter. And there is one reason to learn. There is but one purpose to education,

to become a capable person of good character. That's what we have to be teaching them. That's what we have to monitor. That's what we
