| 0:35.0 | The Latin word for adapted gene is adapt air, which means to adjust or fit. |
| 0:40.7 | And the Greek word for gen means produced by or generated by. |
| 0:45.8 | So an adapted gene generates the ability to adapt or adjust to stress. |
| 0:54.2 | And if we define stress, stress is something that threatens homeostasis, another word that |
| 0:59.4 | I want to define. |
| 1:00.6 | Homeostasis is this steady state of equilibrium. |
| 1:05.2 | For example, different fluids have different pHs in your body. |
| 1:09.2 | You have a normal temperature, 98.6. |
| 1:12.4 | You have normal pulse rate that should be maybe 72. |
| 1:17.1 | You have blood pressure, 120 over 80. |
| 1:20.2 | You have blood sugars, which is usually about 82. |
| 1:24.2 | So you have all these different normal values that are generated by different mechanisms |
| 1:30.6 | that control homeostasis, which is your internal ability to adapt to the environment, to keep |
| 1:36.7 | things normal. |
| 1:38.3 | But when you actually have stress and it pushes some of these factors out of balance, for |
| 1:44.2 | example, when your stress and cortisol goes up, an adapted gene can bring that back |
