begins long before the house itself was constructed. The land it stands on was once the site of

public executions, including that of a notorious thief

named James Yankee Jim Robinson. In 1852, Robinson was convicted of grand larceny and sentenced

to hang. Witnesses reported that his execution was particularly gruesome. He was too tall for the

gallows, and his feet scraped the ground as he struggled for breath.

The sight of his death would later become the grounds of the Whaley family's new home.
