Summary

The Breakfast Club and Weird Science were both released in 1985 and it's sort of apparent which one writer/director John Hughes was more invested in. Although he was well known for having an insanely fast turnaround time on his screenplays, it sounds like he would have been the first to admit that this one could have used a little bit more work.

The accelerated production schedule was part of an overall deal he made with Universal and the experience definitely took a toll on him. It may also have contributed to the falling out he had with Anthony Michael Hall during filming, which meant this was their final collaboration.

And in the end, Hughes didn't even get final cut on the film. So even though it's still revered by those who grew up with it, it's hard not to notice how different it is from the other teen-centric comedies he made around this time.

Topics include: why Kelly LeBrock originally turned down the role of Lisa and how they spent several weeks shooting with a different actress in that role, the unusual reason the bar scene was added to the film, some mixed feelings about Lisa's powers, how this almost feels like two different premises awkwardly stitched together, the TV series that ran for several seasons, a remake that never came to fruition, and much more!

Hey, do you remember weird science?

0:06.5

Hello and welcome, Hey, do you remember, Hey Do You Remember, a show where we reminisce about a movie or TV series we grew up with, then take off the rose-tinted glasses to see how it holds up.

0:31.5

I'm Chris.

0:32.3

I'm Donna.

0:33.2

And I'm Carlos.

And today we're revisiting Weird Science.

Music And I'm Carlos. And today we're revisiting Weird Science. So this might be an odd way to start, but I have to tell you about the psychological tailspin this movie sent me into.

1:01.0

So instead of a more traditional introduction, I'm going to have to jump straight to my memories here, sort of, because you guys, I've apparently never seen weird science before.

1:12.8

What?

1:13.4

And I say apparently because this was news to me as well, I absolutely 100% believed that I had

1:20.4

watched this as a kid, thought it was fine, but that because it was never one of my favorite

1:25.5

John Hughes movies, I just never went back to it.

1:28.6

This started, and I was like, okay, none of this is ringing any bells, but maybe I saw this

1:35.0

on cable and missed the very beginning of it. Then it kept going, and I was like, huh, none of this

1:41.3

is very familiar either. And there's a lot of things here. I'm pretty sure what a stuck with me.

1:46.4

And it was about halfway through where I realized that not only did I not recognize any of this,

1:53.4

but that there were a bunch of scenes I did remember that were not here.

1:58.3

So I thought maybe I'm thinking of the TV show because there was definitely

2:04.0

a TV series that ran for a few years. But this was confusing to me because even though I remember

2:09.4

seeing commercials for the TV series and ads for it in the TV guide, I didn't watch that show.

2:16.1

At least I didn't think I did. But there was an entirely

2:19.3

different shadow movie here that I was remembering. So there had to be some explanation.
