Summary

The marketing for A Knight's Tale sold the film as a raucous, rock 'n roll jousting movie. Although its anachronistic soundtrack features some pretty catchy needle drops, all of us walked away from this one feeling like we didn't really get the movie we were promised.

It sort of bails on that main conceit halfway through, but the good news is that there's still a lot about this that works as a more straightforward period piece.

Topics include: the director's explanation for utilizing a more modern soundtrack and how he responded to criticisms of that decision, the incredible "before they were famous" cast and the teen idol phase of Heath Ledger's career, the surprisingly long running time and some indications that some of this may have been dramatically shuffled around in editing, a couple of deleted scenes we really wish they had made room for, and much more!

Thank you. And I'm Carlos. And today we're revisiting a Knights Tale. Jeffrey Chaucer is one of the most renowned and studied writers of all time.

His poetry has earned him the moniker, The Father of English Literature.

And although historians have done their best to date all of his major works,

1:06.2

there's still some debate when it comes to mapping out a wholly accurate timeline.

1:10.8

For writer-director Brian Helgeland,

1:12.6

a period of about six months to a year where Chaucer remains largely unaccounted for, provided

1:18.1

an interesting jumping-off point for the premise of a movie. But if you're interested in an

1:22.8

accurate depiction of the renowned author, keep looking. Helgelin designed a knight's tale from the ground up

1:28.7

to be brazenly anachronistic. Despite the fact that it took place in the 14th century, he wanted it to

1:35.1

look, sound, and feel modern. To that end, he encouraged all of his department heads to take

1:40.9

liberties with their contributions as well. He favored attitude over

1:44.9

authenticity. And we'll absolutely expand on that decision and Helgelin's reasoning for it as we go

1:51.3

along. But I have to say, the timing for this is great. I just watched and really enjoyed

1:57.4

Lovecraft Country on HBO. And that's also deliberately anachronistic in a lot of

2:03.5

really interesting ways, and that got me thinking about just needle drops at first, using modern

2:09.7

songs in period pieces. I was actually going to pitch this as an episode of Off the Clock
