Summary
Then the Lord’s anger burned against Moses and he said, “What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way to meet you, and he will be glad to see you.” (Exodus 4:14)
Aaron was chosen by God to support Moses in leading the Israelites out of Egypt. When Moses doubted his ability to speak, Aaron stepped in and delivered God’s messages to Pharaoh. He was Moses’s helper! He wasn’t the main leader, but his role was still important—he stood beside Moses, helped perform miracles, and guided the Israelites.
Later, God appointed Aaron as the first high priest; he had a time to support, and he had a time to lead. We know Aaron wasn’t perfect; he made a lot of mistakes, but God allows us to keep serving him despite our mistakes because he is full of grace.
It’s natural for our kids to want to be the star of the show: the leader of the friend group, the starting player on the team, first in band, line leader. But Aaron’s life reminds us that God values leaders and the people who support them. Your child will lead at times, of course, but there will also be times when they need to humbly and graciously stand by the side of another leader. Sometimes being a friend, encourager, and helper is just as important as being in charge.
This week, let’s pray that our kids seek the Lord, not the spotlight. Let’s pray that our kids honor God by serving where he places them, knowing it’s where they are meant to be to make the biggest difference.
Lord, help __________ have a heart like Aaron’s—a heart that serves, supports, and honors you. Help them to remember that they don’t need accolades from people, because those are just temporary. Instead, help them to use their gifts to glorify you in every role that you call them to. Amen.

| 0:03.5 | Hey friends, welcome back to Pardon the Mess. |
| 0:16.5 | I'm your host, Courtney Defeo, and last week I was begging y'all to leave a review, and one of you did. Autumn, come on, girl, you did great. I'm so thankful. She says, I'm really enjoying the weekly prayer episode and coordinating devotional. This has been a meaningful addition to my prayer life. I completed last year's journal and loved the new theme of this year. Thank you, Christian Parenting. |
| 0:37.8 | Thanks, Autumn. I agree. I love this journal and they did a great job writing it. So we are moving |
| 0:43.4 | our way through the Old Testament and we are going to get to Aaron today. But I want to also remind |
| 0:47.6 | you that we are doing me. We are doing a series over on Thursdays at Part of the Mess where once a |
| 0:53.2 | month I do a thing called my virtual mentor. And it's not a great name because I'm actually not your mentor. But the idea is that you would have a topic that you could listen to, whether it's your identity with God, whether it's your intimacy with God. One week we're going to do one on personalities. One week we'll do one on marriage. But you can take that episode, listen to it, instead of reading a book, which I love books, but sometimes you don't have time to listen to books. But you listen to that episode, and then you go talk with a friend or mentor about it. And so follow along all year to be once a month called my virtual mentor. And mentors have just made a huge difference in my life, and sometimes we just get together in chat. But if you can have a little bit of intentionality behind those meetings and coffee meetings, it will go a lot further. So in those show notes of that week is not only just the podcast, but I will put in there some questions, some further resources if you do want to go further on the topic. But let me know how it's going. I have one group and I can't remember where they're from. You'll have to remind me, but they are using this in their mom's group. So as a group, they are listening to the episodes and then getting together as a group and talking about it, which makes me so happy. But for this week, we are talking about Aaron. We're still in the Old Testament. This happens |
| 2:01.7 | in the book of Exodus where we learn about Aaron. And what we learned through Aaron's story is that |
| 2:06.4 | God values our obedience to wherever he calls us in life. Aaron is kind of known as sort of the |
| 2:12.4 | supporting role, the person that's not in the lead all the time, but he's called into situations |
| 2:16.7 | to support Moses. And I really love that this is in the lead all the time, but he's called into situations to support Moses. |
| 2:18.3 | And I really love that this is in the Bible because I think for our kids and even us, |
| 2:23.2 | there's times in our life where we are on the support team, we are not in the leading role. |
| 2:26.7 | And I love that God just reminds us that wherever he calls us and wherever we are obedient, |
| 2:31.9 | he places value on that. |
| 2:33.9 | And I love that he highlights Aaron in this way. |
| 2:36.1 | So let me read Exodus 414. It said, then the Lord's anger burned against Moses and he said, |
| 2:42.7 | what about your brother Aaron, the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way to meet you, |
| 2:48.4 | and he will be glad to see you. So he is calling up someone that's capable. And again, a lot of times Aaron is in that support role, but God's like, hey, you've got this guy. He can speak, pull him into the leadership role. And so later in battle, this is a common story you may have heard as you've been a Christian, but there's a moment in battle where Moses gets tired of holding up the staff and you've got to read the full context to really get the |
| 3:11.1 | story but as you've been a Christian, but there's a moment in battle where Moses gets tired of holding up the |
| 3:08.1 | staff, and you've got to read the full context to really get the story. But Aaron and her are two |
| 3:12.8 | people that are literally holding his arms above so he can make it through not letting that staff |
