Summary
The greatest among you must be a servant. But those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. (Matthew 23:11–12 NLT)
Moses’s life was full of ups and downs. But he is forever known as a great and humble leader. When Moses was born, Pharaoh had ordered all Hebrew baby boys to be killed, but God had a different plan for Moses’s life: He was saved by God’s plan and raised in Pharaoh’s palace. And in another turn of events, God called Moses to lead his people out of Egypt and out of slavery. Moses was a leader among the Israelites, and it cost him everything—his family, his lifestyle, his comfort, and his reputation.
Moses was not always a confident leader; he initially doubted himself and asked God to send someone else. Someone more eloquent. Someone more prepared. Someone more capable. But the mission to free the Israelites wasn’t about Moses—it was about God.
Humble leadership starts with putting God first and knowing that his power works through us. When we follow God, he directs our every step. God doesn’t call perfect leaders; he calls willing ones.
Our kids may not lead a people group to freedom, but they will most likely have opportunities to stand up for what is right, help others, and lead others in the way of the Lord. They may feel unequipped at times, just like Moses did, but as parents, we can remind them that when God says go, we don’t say no—because he equips those he calls.
This week, let’s pray that our kids grow to be leaders who rely on God’s strength before their own.
God, I pray that __________ would be a faithful and humble leader who answers your call, follows you, and confidently relies on your strength to accomplish the tasks you set before them. When they feel unequipped or unprepared, remind them that you will give them all they need. Help them to take their focus off themselves and onto you and your power. Amen.

| 0:03.0 | Hey friends, welcome back to Part of the Mess. I'm your host, Courtney Defeo, and say a little prayer that I get my words together. |
| 0:20.9 | I'm on like the fourth version of this because I can't. Maybe I didn't have enough coffee, but I can't get the words together. So Jesus, Holy Spirit, please speak through me and give me the words. But a couple upfront things, and then we'll get into praying about our kids today and that they would become humble leaders like Moses. But first, leave a review. I know I've asked you all the time, but really, like I really mean it. That would be so helpful to me. Here's one from earlier this year. It says, I love this podcast as a mom of a three-year-old and a new Christian. My biggest desire is to grow in my faith and learn how to share and live that out with my family. I love that this podcast is real, but also serious about |
| 0:55.5 | Jesus. It's so practical and biblical. Amen. Thank you. I think her initials were AF. So whoever you are, |
| 1:01.0 | AF, I'm really grateful that you left that. And to hear that it's doing exactly what I prayed for |
| 1:05.8 | is that it's reaching out to moms of all seasons and even new Christians that are trying to figure |
| 1:10.3 | out how do I do this. The second random update and plea for y'all is I need you guys to get a memory box. Maybe you're so good at organizing all of your kids' stuff. But I got a memory box years ago that holds like those hanging folders and I made the little tabs, kindergarten, first grade, second grade. And it looks, it appears that I completely fell off the |
| 1:28.3 | bandwagon around sixth grade. And then everything else has just shoved into a pile. And so with all my new |
| 1:32.9 | free time and during tears of missing my oldest daughter, I decided to start going back through some |
| 1:37.7 | of her things and labeling them and putting them in the right places. And so here's my tip for you guys. |
| 1:43.4 | It has nothing to do with their faith, but just stay organized, stay on top of it. And just even write when they get artwork home or a paper or a note, just write the age or the year on the back is super helpful because they all get thrown in a pile and you get lost. And so I'm going to share a story in just a few minutes about a paper that I found that I prayed for Ella. And it's so cool being this phase of life to be able to look back and be like, oh my goodness, I pray for that and how God fulfills everything, everything he promises. So today we're going to pray about humble leadership like Moses. In Numbers 12-3, it says, Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth. |
| 2:18.6 | How about that? |
| 2:19.5 | So if you don't know the story of Moses, Pharaoh ordered all babies to be killed, but God actually |
| 2:24.4 | saved Moses. |
| 2:25.4 | And you may have seen this image before, but he saved Moses by nudging his mom to put him in a basket. |
| 2:31.5 | Yes, she did. |
| 2:32.2 | Instead of watching her son get killed, she put him in a basket and put him in a basket. Yes, she did. Instead of watching her son get killed, she put him in a basket |
| 2:36.1 | and put him down the river. And Moses was actually saved and actually raised in Pharaoh's palace. |
| 2:42.4 | The story is like too good. You just can't make this up. So read your Bible. There's fascinating |
| 2:46.4 | stories in there that actually happened. But then Moses was later called to lead his people, |
| 2:51.4 | God's people out of Egypt. It is just an incredible story. And what we learn about Moses is that |
| 2:56.3 | Moses was willing but not perfect. And that's really important for us. As we think about leaders |
