Summary
I will praise the Lord at all times.
I will constantly speak his praises.
I will boast only in the Lord;
let all who are helpless take heart.
Come, let us tell of the Lord’s greatness;
let us exalt his name together.
I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me.
He freed me from all my fears. (Psalm 34:1–4 NLT)
The story of Job is a tough story to read and process through. Why would God allow such immense suffering? Job was a righteous man and Satan knew it, so he challenged God and told him that Job would not continue to praise God if he took everything good away from him. Job lost his sheep, his servants, his kids, and his health. But Job continued to praise God. Despite his circumstances, he never stopped believing God was in control and would redeem his hurts.
We want to protect our kids from hurt and loss. Even thinking of my kids suffering through extreme loss like Job makes my heart shatter. But the reality is that our kids will face some sort of loss. From small losses like not making the team to huge losses like the death of a loved one, each individual loss will feel like a hole in their heart. When they feel that, it is an opportunity for us to show them that faith in God is not about everything going right; it is about believing in his promises no matter what our circumstances are.
It’s easy to love God when things are going right. Every good and perfect gift is from above, so we should praise God for all the good things he gives us. But God does not deserve our praise just because he blesses us, God deserves our praise because he saved us. God’s character remains the same regardless of our circumstances, so we can praise God for who he is, no matter what we are going through.
This week, let’s pray that our kids turn to God when things get hard and know that he is continually working for good in their lives, even if they can’t see it.
Jesus, you are good all the time. Please comfort __________ when they seem to be in an unending season of struggle like Job. And even in times of trouble and distress, I pray that __________ will praise you, knowing that your ways are not our ways, and your time is not our time, but you are always good and always with us. May they grow up to be a person who praises you in word and action through their entire life. Amen.

| 0:03.5 | Hey friends, welcome back to Pardon the Mess. |
| 0:16.5 | I'm your host, Courtney Defeo, and we are on week five of praying together all school year long. And if you haven't invited a friend to do this, would you do that? Just text a friend and say, hey, let's pray together every Monday for our kids and send them the link to the journal over at Christianparenting.org. The journal is called A Great Cloud of Witnesses. I always have to remind myself. At some point, I'll memorize it. |
| 0:38.6 | But that is the journal we are praying through, and it's not too late to have your friends join us. |
| 0:43.1 | Would you also do me another favor and leave a review? If you've never left to review, |
| 0:47.3 | wherever you listen to podcasts on Spotify or Apple, that would be super helpful to help other parents find us. |
| 0:52.8 | So leave a review for me. And then I wanted to |
| 0:55.5 | just let you know this past week or two, I got to baptize some people at my church. They needed some |
| 1:00.9 | volunteers. And my friend asked me to be in the tub at one of the services. And y'all, |
| 1:05.1 | there is nothing like that experience, baptizing somebody, but my favorite part about it, |
| 1:10.7 | I happen to have a couple |
| 1:11.5 | young girls that were getting baptized and looking out right in front of me where their parents |
| 1:16.2 | and their grandparents circled around watching and just the tears that were flowing. |
| 1:20.8 | There's just nothing like it to say, like, this is what matters. This is what you care about |
| 1:25.6 | as a parent. And so I want to just remind you, and no guilt, if your kids haven't made that decision |
| 1:30.3 | yet, but just know that this effort, praying for your kids and focusing on their faith |
| 1:35.3 | is time well spent. |
| 1:37.3 | And not to say that sports are bad or grades are bad or what they were to homecoming is bad. |
| 1:42.3 | Like all that stuff is fun and important. But the main |
| 1:44.7 | thing is that we are introducing them to Jesus and that we are putting them in the path of learning |
| 1:51.3 | about the gospel. And so God can make that happen regardless of what we do, but it really is |
| 1:56.9 | special to kind of watch those parents realize like, this was my biggest prayer. And it is happening |
