Summary

But now your kingdom will not endure; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him ruler of his people, because you have not kept the Lord’s command. (1 Samuel 13:14)

You may remember David for being a king or for beating Goliath in an epic battle. David’s story is one of those Bible stories that inspires us to face with courage whatever God lays before us. However, one of the noteworthy moments in David’s story was when God said that he was “a man after God’s own heart.” David was far from perfect. He was a shepherd turned king. He committed adultery with Bathsheba and then arranged her husband’s death. He messed up again and again, however we can see in the Psalms that David had a deep love for God and a willingness to repent, and that he met with God often. When he sinned, he didn’t hide; he repented and turned back to God because his relationship with God mattered most and he wanted to be aligned with him.

It’s encouraging to note that God chose David to lead because of his pure desires for God, not because he was the best behaved, most talented, or most skilled in the world’s terms.

What does that mean for us? We are all called to follow Jesus, and that means we are to live in harmony with what God’s heart desires for his people. As our kids grow up, it can be easy for them to follow their own hearts or what others want. But we can encourage them to make decisions and lead others based on God’s desires, not earthly desires, and that is hard!

Let’s pray that our kids are known as people after God’s own heart and that each of our children reflects the heart of God in their schools, communities and friend circles.

Father, please help __________ to desire what you desire. Lead them to live in a way that’s pleasing to you. I pray they know your heart more and more each year. Give them a heart like David’s, one that seeks you above all else and makes time to meet with you day after day. Amen.

Hey friends, welcome back to Part of the Mess.

0:16.6

I'm your host, Courtney Defeo.

0:17.7

How is it going out there?

0:19.3

How's the traffic in December?

0:21.3

If you've clicked on this in December, I hope it provides just a little bit of perspective.

0:25.8

Like, let's just pull up above our list and the chaos and just have a moment to pray for something so important for our kids.

0:32.7

And I would ask you to do two things. One, will you leave a review if you're enjoying this podcast? It really helps other people find us. And then second, will you tell someone about this? Maybe you come into contact with a mom at this Christmas season or the beginning year that is just so overwhelmed. And maybe this could be the thing that recenters her every week. And I've heard from so many of you that it's like a ritual. You drive into work on Monday and you listen to it. And that makes me so happy because I think it's a pause and our week just kind of pull up and say, God, what are you doing in the world? How can I just be more committed to you? How can I continue to surrender my kids to you over and over again? And just a chance to pray very specifically for our kids. And that's one of my

1:12.1

favorite things about this moment, even for me, is that these specific things or maybe things

1:17.1

I wouldn't have prayed for my kids or thought of to pray. And so this week, we are going to

1:21.2

pray about David's story, a man after God's own heart. But I want to just go back to why we are

1:27.1

doing this this year. It's called A Great Cloud of Witness. This is the journal that Christian parenting put together. And every week we're praying about a different person in the Bible and just what we can learn about him or her and what we can learn about God through that. And so I want to read the beginning of it because it's just a good re-centering of why we're doing this. Faith is believing in what we cannot see. The ultimate example of this is found in Hebrews 11.

1:49.3

In this passage, we are given a list of Old Testament people who have profound trust in God and

1:54.9

acted upon that trust. This list is known as the Hall of Faith. It's the story of men and women that have long been

2:01.8

examples of how to live as believers. Some of the people listed in the Hall of Faith are Abraham,

2:06.9

Sarah, Moses, Rehab, and they're all from the Old Testament, but God's story continues.

2:12.0

There are men and women throughout the Old and New Testaments that have amazing testimonies of

2:16.1

faith. Hebrews 12 refers to these people as a

2:19.1

great cloud of witnesses because their lives were a witness to God's faithfulness. And so that is

2:24.7

why we're here, guys. That is who I want to be a part of as a great cloud of witnesses that helped

2:29.9

carry on the legacy of faith in my time and my my generation, and also with my own family. So this
