Senators are removing their out-of-office auto replies as they return from an August recess

this week, their first order of business, avoiding a government shutdown. Every year, Congress

has until October 1 to pass the next year's budget, and just about every year, they're

late. Without a budget, the government will shut down at the end of September, bringing

everything to a halt, including the House's potential impeachment inquiries against President

Biden to a halt. With a tight deadline and much disagreement, including national disaster

relief and funds for Ukraine, its expected Congress will try to pass a continuing resolution

to keep Uncle Sam funded while they continue debating. They'll need to find common ground

soon. Budgets across the board will be cut 1% if the 12 appropriations bills used to fund

federal agencies like defense and transportation aren't passed by 2024.
