Matthew 13: 44-46 - 'He sells everything he owns and buys the field.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

- 546 (in 'The Proclamation of the Kingdom of God') - Jesus' invitation to enter his kingdom comes in the form of parables, a characteristic feature of his teaching. Through his parables he invites people to the feast of the kingdom, but he also asks for a radical choice: to gain the kingdom, one must give everything. Words are not enough, deeds are required. The parables are like mirrors for man: will he be hard soil or good earth for the word? What use has he made of the talents he has received? Jesus and the presence of the kingdom in this world are secretly at the heart of the parables. One must enter the kingdom, that is, become a disciple of Christ, in order to "know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven". For those who stay "outside", everything remains enigmatic.

Hi everyone. Welcome back to daily gospel exegesis. What we're on about in this podcast is helping

0:18.2

you understand the literal sense of scripture. The Catholic Church

0:21.8

teaches that if you want to understand the Bible, you need to make a distinction between

0:26.1

the literal sense and the spiritual sense of the text. And we always must start with the literal

0:32.5

sense. That is the church's teaching. So this is the only podcast out there which every day helps you dive into

0:38.9

the text verse by verse and take a look at the literal sense. And as you'll see today, it's particularly

0:44.8

important that we do it this way when we're looking at parables because it's very easy to jump to

0:50.0

a spiritual interpretation of the parable. and we sometimes forget that Jesus usually had

0:55.7

one specific meaning in mind. He had a literal sense that he was trying to communicate with

1:00.2

these parables. So that's what we will look at today, and we're in Matthew chapter 13,

1:06.6

verses 44 to 46. This is the reading you would hear at today's Mass.

1:12.2

Jesus said to the crowds,

1:14.6

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field which someone has found.

1:20.5

He hides it again, goes off happy, sells everything he owns and buys the field.

1:32.3

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he finds one of great value, he goes and sells everything he owns and buys it.

1:39.3

So that's our short reading today. We have two little parables in here,

1:43.3

and these are ones that you may

1:44.8

not have heard of before, or certainly haven't heard very frequently. So we're in Matthew chapter

1:50.0

13, often called the parables chapter in Matthew, or the kingdom parables chapter. So here, Matthew

1:56.1

has assembled seven kingdom parables that Jesus speaks throughout his ministry. So it's possible that the parables

2:02.4

we have here in Matthew 13 were not said on one occasion. Maybe Matthew has just combined them

2:07.6

together in the one chapter. And that would certainly make sense. But what's interesting about
