Matthew 7: 15-20 - 'You will be able to tell them by their fruits.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

- 2285 (in 'Respect for the Souls of Others: Scandal') - Scandal takes on a particular gravity by reason of the authority of those who cause it or the weakness of those who are scandalized. It prompted our Lord to utter this curse: "Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened round his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea." Scandal is grave when given by those who by nature or office are obliged to teach and educate others. Jesus reproaches the scribes and Pharisees on this account: he likens them to wolves in sheep's clothing.

- 2005 (in 'Grace') - Since it belongs to the supernatural order, grace escapes our experience and cannot be known except by faith. We cannot therefore rely on our feelings or our works to conclude that we are justified and saved. However, according to the Lord's words "Thus you will know them by their fruits" - reflection on God's blessings in our life and in the lives of the saints offers us a guarantee that grace is at work in us and spurs us on to an ever greater faith and an attitude of trustful poverty. A pleasing illustration of this attitude is found in the reply of St. Joan of Arc to a question posed as a trap by her ecclesiastical judges: "Asked if she knew that she was in God's grace, she replied: 'If I am not, may it please God to put me in it; if I am, may it please God to keep me there.'"

Hi everyone. Welcome back to the Daily Gospel Exegesis podcast. Thanks for all those who listen regularly. I pray that you're blessed by this podcast by listening in every day, taking a look at the literal sense of scripture.

0:26.7

So the idea is, before you go to Mass and you hear the sermon about this passage, you can get a good grounding in the literal sense of scripture.

0:35.0

That's what we're trying to do in this podcast.

0:39.3

And I know so many of you are benefiting from this approach. If you do enjoy this podcast, if you feel like you're

0:44.4

being blessed by it, then please tell other people about it. If we want this ministry and this podcast

0:49.6

to grow, it really only does that by word of mouth, by you guys, the listeners, telling other people

0:55.0

about it. Please also consider leaving a review on iTunes or your other provider. Next time that

1:00.5

pops up as an option, please do leave a positive review and subscribe on YouTube as well. All of

1:05.9

these things help the internet providers work out that this is a podcast that people enjoy. And there's more things

1:12.2

we'd like to do with this ministry, but really, we need you to spread the word and tell others how

1:17.0

this podcast works and how it's benefited you. So today's reading at Mass is Matthew chapter 7,

1:23.2

verses 15 to 20. Jesus said to his disciples,

1:28.8

Beware of false prophets who come to you disguised as sheep, but underneath are ravenous wolves.

1:36.1

You will be able to tell them by their fruits. Can people pick grapes from thorns or figs from

1:42.7

thistles? In the same way, a sound tree produces

1:46.8

good fruit, but a rotten tree, bad fruit. A sound tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor a rotten

1:53.9

tree bear good fruit. Any tree that does not produce good fruit is cut down and thrown on the fire. I repeat, you will be

2:03.6

able to tell them by their fruits. So that's our passage for today and we're right in the midst

2:10.5

of the sermon on the mount where Jesus is giving an extended sermon about what true righteousness is.

2:20.1

And in chapter 7 he's discussing all sorts of topics about the kingdom of God and what true righteousness is and how to distinguish false

2:26.9

Christians from true Christians. Verse 15, we get to today. It says, Jesus said to his disciples,

2:33.8

now that's not in the original.
