Matthew 7: 21-29 - 'The wise man built his house on a rock.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

- 1970 (In 'The New Law or the Law of the Gospel') - The Law of the Gospel requires us to make the decisive choice between “the two ways” and to put into practice the words of the Lord. It is summed up in the Golden Rule, “Whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them; this is the law and the prophets.”

- 1821 (In 'Hope') - We can therefore hope in the glory of heaven promised by God to those who love him and do his will. In every circumstance, each one of us should hope, with the grace of God, to persevere “to the end” and to obtain the joy of heaven, as God’s eternal reward for the good works accomplished with the grace of Christ (abbreviated).

- 2611 (In 'Jesus teaches us how to pray') - The prayer of faith consists not only in saying “Lord, Lord,” but in disposing the heart to do the will of the Father (abbreviated).

- 2826 (In 'Thy Will Be done on Earth as it is in Heaven') - By prayer we can discern “what is the will of God” and obtain the endurance to do it. Jesus teaches us that one enters the kingdom of heaven not by speaking words, but by doing “the will of my Father in heaven.”

- 581 (in 'Jesus and the Law') - The Jewish people and their spiritual leaders viewed Jesus as a rabbi. He often argued within the framework of rabbinical interpretation of the Law. Yet Jesus could not help but offend the teachers of the Law, for he was not content to propose his interpretation alongside theirs but taught the people "as one who had authority, and not as their scribes". In Jesus, the same Word of God that had resounded on Mount Sinai to give the written Law to Moses, made itself heard anew on the Mount of the Beatitudes. Jesus did not abolish the Law but fulfilled it by giving its ultimate interpretation in a divine way: "You have heard that it was said to the men of old. . . But I say to you. . ."

Hi everyone. Welcome back to Logical Bible Study. Thanks again for tuning in to this Catholic

0:17.8

podcast released every day where we look at the Gospels, the four Gospels

0:22.8

where Jesus speaks to us and tells us what God's will is. And that's why it's so important

0:27.9

that we get into the Gospels and really look at the literal sense in an academic, rigorous way.

0:33.3

And that's what we try to do in this podcast. Today in particular, we're looking at some of the

0:38.8

most controversial, but some of the most important words of Jesus. So Matthew chapter 7,

0:44.4

verses 21 to 29. Jesus said to his disciples, it is not those who say to me, Lord, Lord, who will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the person who does the will of my father in heaven.

1:00.8

When the day comes, many will say to me, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, cast out demons in your name, work many miracles in your name. Then I shall tell them

1:13.5

to their faces. I have never known you, away from me, you evil men. Therefore, everyone who listens to

1:22.0

these words of mine and acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on rock rain came down floods rose gales blue and hurled themselves against that house and it did not fall it was founded on rock

1:38.8

but everyone who listens to these words of mine and does not act on them, we'll be like a stupid man who

1:45.8

built his house on sand.

1:48.2

Rain came down, floods rose, gales blew, and struck that house, and it fell, and what a fall

1:56.2

it had had.

1:59.0

Jesus had now finished what he wanted to say, and his teaching made a deep impression on the people,

2:04.9

because he taught them with authority and not like their own scribes.

2:12.3

So in the Sermon on the Mount here, we're right at the end of the sermon, actually.

2:16.0

This is the last part of it.

2:17.9

And the Sermon on the Mount is all We're right at the end of the sermon, actually. This is the last part of it. And the sermon on the Mount is all about Jesus contrasting false righteousness with true

2:24.4

righteousness. And we're going to see an example of that here. Jesus has now finished giving

2:28.8

the bulk of the commandments. He's told his disciples what the commandments are. And now today he stresses the importance of following those commandments.

2:37.9

That's what he's going to say.
