I'm Carla Marie, and today is Wednesday, October 4th, 2023. The Core 4, the four headlines you need to know.

I told you this would happen. I told you on Monday, we'd have some serious drama in Washington, D.C.

And it all went down yesterday, so

let's break it down. You've probably seen the headlines already. Speaker of the House,

Kevin McCarthy, lost the top spot in the House of Representatives. So first off, we need to

understand why that happened. And the easiest answer is a small group of Republicans never really wanted

McCarthy there in the first place. And then he made a deal with President Biden to raise the

debt ceiling a couple of months ago and then worked with Democrats over the weekend to avoid

a government shutdown. So this tiny group of Republicans felt they couldn't trust McCarthy anymore

since, I don't know, he did his job and worked with Democrats to keep the government funded.

So on Monday, after being furious about the government not being shut down, Representative Matt Gates said he would explore the idea of a vote of no confidence, which would strip McCarthy of his title as Speaker of the House. That brings us to yesterday, where the vote of no confidence, which would strip McCarthy of his title as Speaker of the House.

That brings us to yesterday, where the vote of no confidence happened, and McCarthy did in fact

lose the vote by a tally of 216 to 210. And the craziest bit of irony here is the eight Republicans

who were furious about McCarthy working with Democrats in the first

place had to then vote with Democrats in order to get McCarthy voted out. It is the first time

in American history that a House Speaker was removed from their position. Later in the day,

McCarthy clarified that he wouldn't be running again, meaning that the party needs to figure out

who their next leader is going to be.
