India's election delivered a surprise result. AI workers warned about a grave risk to

India's election was a stunning setback to the country's leader.

Prime Minister Norendra Modi swept to power in

2014 as the head of the B.J.P. That's India's right-wing Hindu Nationalist Party.

Modi has cultivated an image as a popular strongman and a serial winner.

During this campaign, he referred to India's Muslims as infiltrators, and he tried to fan the

flames of anti-Muslim sentiment among Hindu voters.

Most political analysts had expected him to easily dominate what has been called the

world's biggest election.

Almost a billion people are registered to vote in India.

But results yesterday showed that his party is set to lose its majority.

That means it will have to rely on its allies to form a government.

Raul Gandhi is a politician with India's main... on its'

main opposition party, the Indian National Congress.

He spoke about the result yesterday.

The main thing that this election has said,

the country has unanimously and clearly stated,

we do not want Mr. Narendram Modi and Mr. Amit Shah to be involved in the running of this country.
