President Donald Trump suggested that the U.S. would take control of Gaza.

seven stories. Trump held a news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

yesterday at the White House. He suggested that the U.S. could take a, quote, long-term ownership position to redevelop Gaza.

He proposed permanently removing Gaza's 2.2 million Palestinians from the territory, and he

wouldn't rule out that such a move would be enforced by U.S. troops. Trump laid out his vision.

I think the potential in the Gaza Strip is unbelievable.

He went on, I don't want to be cute.

I don't want to be a wise guy, but the Riviera of the Middle East,

this could be something that could be so magnificent. Netanyahu said he was open to the plan.

The proposition would further the prime minister's project of redrawing the map in the Middle East.

But Palestinians, Arab countries, and many world leaders immediately and strongly rejected the idea. The forcible deportation of a population

is illegal under international law. And Palestinians have a long history of displacement. More than half

of Gaza's residents are already refugees or the

descendants of refugees. They fled or were expelled from their former homes following the creation

of Israel in 1948.
