Seattle came up with a novel solution.

Hello, from the KUOW Newsroom. This is Seattle Now. I'm Patricia Murphy with a roundup of today's

top stories. It's Wednesday, June 25th. Seattle faces a budget deficit and federal funding threats

could make it worse. So should the city raise taxes or cut spending? In a press conference

today, Mayor Bruce Harrell answered that question.

Joshua McNichols has more.

Mayor Harrell would raise taxes on the city's wealthiest companies while cutting taxes for 90% of

businesses. Most companies would pay no business and occupation taxes at all.

Harold credited Councilmember Alexis Mercedes-Rink for building support for the idea. He said

it could raise $90 million and still be business friendly. Meanwhile, the city has also cut costs

by freezing non-essential travel, pausing tech upgrades, and eliminating vacant jobs. The new tax

plan needs approval from the city council, then voters will decide on it in the fall

election.

So far, reactions are mixed.

John Skulls heads the Downtown Seattle Association.

He called the proposal boneheaded.

Mayoral candidate Katie Wilson says the plan is good, but should have come earlier.
