South Korea's president declared and then lifted martial law.

Let's get you caught up with today's seven stories.

It was a remarkable and tumultuous six hours in South Korea.

Late Tuesday night, South Korea time, President Yun Songyol declared emergency martial law in a televised address,

suspending the country's democracy for the first time since the 1980s.

He accused opposition lawmakers who hold the country's National Assembly of anti-state

activities. That sparked thousands of protesters to gather outside the National Assembly and demand

a return to democratic government. Those protesters were chanting, end the martial law.

With police officers forming a barricade around the National Assembly,

some opposition lawmakers climbed through windows to get into the voting chamber.

Once there, they voted to overturn Yun's decree.

At first, the military said it would not stand down.

But just before dawn this morning, Yun relented and called off the military.

But this story is far from over.

Now lawmakers are moving to impeach the unpopular conservative president.

The whole incident took the U.S. by surprise.
