We've learned a lot more about what started the devastating fires in Maui.

Kansas is investigating a police raid at a newspaper and the Gulf of Mexico is setting heat records.

Let's get you caught up with today's seven stories.

Number one, Maui's first reported fire was likely caused by power lines. An electrical malfunction caught

on video matches data from August 7th showing a significant incident in Hawaiian

Electric's grid. This finding adds to evidence that utility equipment sparked multiple fires last week.

Maui residents told the post that they had been complaining to the utility for years about its aging poles and power lines.

Resident Shane Shro witnessed the early stages of the fire right across the street from

his home and recorded it.

The video showed a fallen power line burning with smoke and wind whipping. He

hoped the video would help determine what caused the deadly Maui wildfires.

He spoke to reporters yesterday about what he saw.

I hear a pop coming from across the street.

As soon as I hear the pop, all I heard is like electrical, like,

just going on the ground there.

And look, there's the power line right there.

And shortly after

after thing was just arcing away on the ground

landed right in dry grass so sparks and then there was a fire.

The death toll from the fires rose to 106 yesterday. Only five victims have been
