Well, now we've got the details on how it went.

So Dart, or the double asteroid redirection test, slammed into the asteroid dimorphis

at 14,000 miles per hour on September 26th.

Dymorphis was never a threat to Earth, just an unfortunate test subject.

Dymorphus orbits the larger asteroid didomos, and the point of the test was to see if a collision could knock the asteroid off its orbits,

therefore proving that as a viable method for nudging any asteroids on a path for Earth off their trajectory

Dart was a wee spacecraft with basically just a camera on board, which shared images every
