Summary

It was a rain-affected classic as Round 2 of the World Endurance Championship headed to Emilia-Romagna and the 6 Hours of Imola. Ferrari were hopeful for home glory after a perfect 1-2-3 in Qualifying, but a strategic blunder when the rain fell mid-race dashed all hope for the Italian manufacturer. On the Autosport podcast, Kevin Turner is joined by Gary Watkins as they break down just how Ferrari lost in Imola, how Kamui Kobayashi survived the rain, a massive fuel save at the end of the race, and the pressure of Kevin Estre in the Porsche Penske. There's also a chat about the state of the field's Balance of Performance and why Imola showed the FIA and ACO still might be missing the mark, and the LMGT3 category as Team WRT brought home a 1-2 finish for BMW, with MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi scoring his first WEC podium. Toyota of Mike Conway, Kamaukabayashi and Nick DeFries.

And joining me to explain how this happened, how Ferrari got it so wrong, or did it work

0:38.6

to her to get it so right, is Gary Watkins, who's only just returned from Italy.

0:44.4

So welcome, Gary.

0:45.4

I hope the flight delays weren't too traumatic.

0:49.5

No, they were traumatic, but yeah, it was a traumatic race, I think, especially for Ferrari. Yeah, you said,

0:57.3

you know, talking about Toyota, for me, Toyota didn't win it. Ferrari lost it. Maybe not,

1:04.2

they didn't lose it. They threw it away. It's as simple as that. So how did that happen then?

1:09.9

Basically, it all turned on the weather, really, didn't it? And decisions made as that. So how did that happen then? Basically it all turned on the weather really, didn't it?

1:12.4

And decisions made as a result of that changeable weather.

1:15.7

So where did Ferrari get it so wrong?

1:17.6

Because it's not like they blew it all at the start, was it?

1:19.9

It was quite a long way into the race before it all unraveled.

1:22.8

Yeah, this was all happening sort of just on the cusp of the four-hour market.

1:27.5

It's a six-hour race, say, and after the 10 hours or 1812 kilometers at Qatar, we're back to the

1:34.9

normal, regular six-hour races, and they pretty much dominated, although it is important to say

1:43.3

that at the time this whole scenario started to unfold, Ferrari wasn't actually leading.

1:51.7

Partly that was because James Calado had pitted during under green flag conditions where the rest of the field pitted under an FCY.
