What are we talking about tonight? So when we're learning to do something new, at first, as I'm sure you're aware by now,

0:10.0

we're generally pretty awkward whenever we do something new, whether it's playing an instrument or drawing or photography or a new application on a computer using a new kind of mouse for the computer.

0:27.0

Anything that is new, at first we're generally pretty awkward at and that's because the movements are being guided by your frontal lobe, which is the part of your brain that of course makes decisions and merits life,

0:43.5

and is for impulse control.

0:48.1

It's really important that we have frontal lobes.

0:51.8

It's what actually provides us with a great survival advantage.

0:56.0

Both emotionally the frontal lobe and the right side and left side where most of the language is not all but a lot of the

language is provided. This gives us wonderful opportunities to connect and

social,

1:13.0

to be social beings.

1:15.0

But the Rfuelove is not particularly good

1:37.0

For instance, suppose you're playing a game of ping pong with someone or bowling or all the things that I don't really do because I'm a neurotic Jew from the

1:45.2

upper west side but if I did do them and I wanted to screw with the people I was

1:51.2

competing with I would ask them to talk me through their wonderful ping-pong

1:56.7

back end or their wonderful bowling technique because in making them narrated for me I would be switching the guidance of those

2:05.4

movements back from the basal ganglia where it's smooth to the frontal lobe where

2:10.8

they would become very very awkward at what they do.

2:15.0

Once you engrain a habit, a routine, a behavior, it moves from the frontal lobe to

2:21.6

basal ganglia, which is roughly in the... from the area and it's not conscious.
