could default on its debts,

House lawmakers have left Washington

for the Memorial Day holiday weekend

without a deal to raise the debt ceiling.

But according to The New York Times,

White House officials and Republican leaders

are closing in on an agreement, though progress remains slow.

We'll continue to work. We work all day today. We'll continue to work through the night. There's no agreement. Look, it's not easy. This is a big issue, and it's not something to solve easily.

We want to make sure it's worthy of American people, and we'll continue working until we get it done.
