The 1st of December, 1870.

A wooden caisson had been sunk to serve as a deep foundation

for a new bridge from Manhattan to Brooklyn.

Inside it, workmen labored late into the night.

Suddenly, a small fire in the roof exploded.

And then all above is this mass of living coals.

They tried to put out the flames, but their buckets of water were useless.

Like an animal, they're feeding this ravening beast with water, and nothing is subduing

it.

It could not be put out.

They were sending hoses of water up into the roof of the caisson.

They were blowing steam in there, and still every time water would pour out they would look up and check the roof

would still be burning the chief engineer was washington roebling 33 years old and he was largely

dealing with this on his own robeling's assistants deliberately tried to live at least three miles away
