The 12th of January, 1950, Liverpool. In St George's Hall, it was the first day of a murder

trial. A year before, there'd been an armed robbery at a local cinema. The manager and an

assistant were killed. Now, two local men stood accused. It was a horrific cold-blooded murder where two innocent men were killed for really quite paltry

takings and it captured the imagination of the public.

Amid the gloom and grind of Liverpool's post-war austerity, many ordinary people turned out to watch the trial from the public gallery.

Apparently, people were queuing round the block to get in.

So you can assume that the court was packed to the gunwales.

In those days, anyone convicted of murder would be hanged.

And so people were interested to come to court because I think gruesomely it was a form of entertainment. Down below were rows of men in wigs and gowns ready to begin.

Sitting among them in the front row was a woman.

She was young, she was beautiful.

She would have been dressed in a silk gown, a black coat, a wig, bands.
