One objection that's often raised against the Bible is that it is pro-slavery. You can read

passages in the Old Testament that contain

prescriptions for how to treat slaves, and in the Greco-Roman Society of the New Testament,

slavery was extremely common. In his book backgrounds of early Christianity, historian Everett Ferguson

says that it's estimated that one in five residents in Rome was a slave. And if the early

church's demographics reflect this broader pattern, then 20% of the congregational

makeup in the first century churches could have been a part of the slave class.

That percentage might have even been higher when you consider the fact that Christianity's

moral teaching often appealed to slaves.

It taught that human beings were made in God's image and worthy of dignity as such, and so slaves were drawn to this.

This also helps us make sense of why Paul addresses slaves directly in the churches to whom he was writing.

You think of Ephesians chapter 6 verse 5, Colossians chapter 3 verse 22, or 1 Corinthians chapter 7.
