The act of driving out merchants signifies a call to purity in worship. Zeal for God's house reflects deep spiritual commitment. Commercialization of sacred spaces is a critical issue. Jesus' actions challenge the status quo of religious practices. The temple should be a place of worship, not business. The use of a whip symbolizes righteous anger. This event foreshadows the conflict between Jesus and religious leaders. Understanding the context of the temple's purpose is essential. The cleansing of the temple is a pivotal moment in Jesus' ministry. Hey friends, I'm Rachel Grohl and I'm your host for the Hearing Jesus podcast, where I help you to know God and to make him known.

Let's talk about passion. Have you ever been so passionate about something that you couldn't just stay quiet anymore?

0:18.1

I think about different moments even in the life of my family where we were maybe

0:22.4

planning a trip to Disney and it was so exciting. I couldn't keep it a surprise from them. Or maybe the

0:29.2

flip side. When you see somebody being treated unfairly, even some of my kids' friends, I have to

0:35.8

speak up out of injustice and I want to set the record

0:39.1

straight and help those people. I think there's always situations where we can be overcome

0:45.9

with passion and we can't keep our mouths shut as a result of it. Well, that's kind of where we

0:51.4

find ourselves in today's story. And we find Jesus in this part of John's gospel that was during the Passover. And what we see is Jesus entering into the temple courts in Jerusalem, which if remember, the temple was a place that was meant for worship and prayer for people to go and to encounter God.

1:13.0

The temple was made up of a bunch of different kinds of courts, though. The outer courts were

1:17.3

where the Gentiles were allowed to come and the Jewish people were allowed to go to the

1:21.4

inner courts. And even then, it was separated by men and women. The outer courts, they had turned, however, into a marketplace,

1:30.1

meaning, picture this. There's tables that are piled with coins, and there are merchants

1:35.2

that are selling animals for a very unfair price. And buying and selling is what's happening

1:41.7

in that courtyard instead of prayer and reflection and worship.

1:46.5

And so Jesus comes in and he takes a look at what's happening.

1:50.4

We're going to read the passage and then we're going to see what happens as a result.

1:54.8

So I'm reading from today, John chapter 2 versus 12 through 25.

1:58.8

I'm reading from the NASB today. But again, you read from your favorite

2:02.8

version. We had this discussion in my course a couple weeks ago, and people were saying, well,

2:07.7

why don't you use the King James? I don't use the King James because I don't talk in the King James

2:12.2

kind of language. It doesn't feel natural to me. I don't understand it as well. I like the NASB, but again, you use your
