On the first day of trading of 2023, the NASDAQ closed down 0.8%.

The S&P 500 ended down 0.8%. The S&P 500 ended down 0.4% and the Dow finished fractionally lower. Energy

marked the worst sector performer on the session, plunging 3.6 percent.

With 6 of 11 S&P segments finishing the day lower,

Infotech was another major declineer falling by 1 percent.

Turning to the bond market, action among fixed income instruments was muted.

The 10-year Treasury yield dipped four bases points to 3.79%

while the two-year yield was basically flat at 4.4 percent.

In our day watch is a notable new low.

Rivian Automotive suffered another retreat, adding to the steady decline that has marked trading over the past month.

Shears slipped another 6% to reach a fresh 52 week low.

R IVN dropped $1.9 on the day to close at $17.34.
