Higher gas prices for the rest of this year.

For Marketplace, I'm Novosopo. Good morning. The Strait of Hormuz, the critical waterway for global shipping, remains almost completely shut.

Traffic data shows just three tankers have crossed the strait recently, according to Reuters.

That means energy markets are not getting any relief soon. And now a top Trump

administration official is saying that gas prices here in the U.S. might remain elevated until next

year. Marketplaces Nancy Marshall-Genzor joins me now with the details. Good morning, Nancy.

Good morning. So this news on gas prices came from Energy Secretary Chris Wright this weekend.

What did he have to say?

Wright appeared on CNN yesterday, Nova, and he was asked when gas could go back to under $3 a gallon.

Here's what he said.

I don't know.

That could happen later this year.

That might not happen until next year.

But prices have likely peaked and they'll start going

down. Certainly with a resolution of this conflict, you'll see prices go down. Prices across the board

on energy prices will go down. Now, this is a change, Nova, from what Wright said about a month ago

on NBC. He said then that there was a very good chance that gas would be

back below $3 a gallon by this summer. According to AAA, gas averaged $2.98 a gallon before the

war in the Middle East. And where are gas prices today?

AAA says the average right now is $4.4 a gallon. Gas Buddy's average price is $3.97 a gallon.

And the timing here isn't great, right, Nancy? I mean, we have summer approaching.
