Volvo vaginitis refers to inflammation and irritation of the vulva and vagina.

It's a common condition affecting girls between the ages of 3 and 10 years old.

The skin and mucosa in this area is sensitive and thin in young girls.

The vagina is more prone to colonization and infection

with bacteria spread from the feces.

Vulva vaginitis can be exacerbated by poor toilet hygiene, for example wiping from back to front,

use of chemicals and soaps in cleaning the area,

tight clothing that traps moisture and sweat in the area,

constipation, thread worms, pressure on the area, for example, horse riding,

and heavily chlorinated swimming pools.

Volvo vaginitis is uncommon after puberty as estrogen helps to keep the skin and vaginal mucosa healthy.

Let's talk about the presentation.

Volvovaginitis is a common presentation in young girls before puberty.

It presents with soreness, itching, erythema around the labia, vaginal discharge, and dysuria

or burning or stinging when passing urine.

A urine dipstick may show leukocytes but no nitrites.

It's often misdiagnosed as a urinary tract infection.
