The right to vote in the United States is often called sacred, as if it had been instituted by God.

In fact, it is not even guaranteed by the Constitution.

The founders regarded the right to vote as a privilege.

They wanted to protect it for white men who owned property, and they gave individual states the power to administer voting as they saw fit.

Over the decades, especially since the Civil War, it's been expanded and contracted by different states at different times.

But that doesn't mean the federal government can't get involved.

President Trump is focused on so-called

voter fraud, the idea that some people are exercising the right to vote when they're not supposed

to. It's about the concern of so many Americans that improper voting has taken place and canceling out

the votes of lawful American citizens. That is why President

Theodore Roosevelt once said it is the affair of every honest voter, wherever born, to see that

no fraudulent voting is allowed. Now, this fall, the Trump administration suddenly demanded

that millions of North Carolina

voting records be turned over to immigration authorities. The deadline was the 25th of September,

with just two months left before the next election. Since Hurricane Florence, that has been

extended. Colin Campbell is editor of the North Carolina Insider Reporter. Colin,

millions of records is all about? Well, the Justice Department and Immigrations and Customs

Enforcement, better known as ICE, which have been responsible for these subpoenas, is not making any public

comments about what they're looking for, what this investigation involves, and what they hope

to get from these documents.
