Welcome to Storyworthy. My name is Christine Blackburn, and I'm here with Pannas Finney, and we're coming to you from the offices with the Volunteer Center of Greater Milwaukee.

1:01.1

Yay!

1:02.3

Yes, yes, there are many, many Packer and Milwaukee Brewer posters up on the wall.

1:08.7

People are ready to volunteer.

1:27.7

They'll be a greater Milwaukee. Now, the people of lesser Milwaukee, they can go fuck themselves. This is only for people in greater Milwaukee. What does that mean? In other words, the city proper and then the suburbs. That's what they mean by greater metro area or something. Yeah, but there's no opposite. There's no lesser. Here's the thing with a volunteering place like that.

1:32.3

Like my father, Jack Blackburn, would say, if you do it, they will let you.

1:35.6

Meaning that anybody's willing to volunteer your time.

1:38.1

I used to work for money, not volunteer, for the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, selling tickets.

1:48.3

I know, exciting.

1:57.2

And we had these nice volunteer ladies who would come in to, like, help put together the packages of, you know, tickets to send them to people.

2:50.9

This is when you would physically have tickets as opposed to an app on your cell phone that would allow you to scan yourself in. So it's like they were so sweet and old and incompetent that they were just like a burden on the office. But they did let them volunteer though, didn't that? You couldn't not let them in. You'd be like, no, you're actually more trouble than your worth. It's not something you can say to an old lady who's been going to the symphony for 55 years. Right, right, right. But it's like they would just kind of make up stuff for them to do. There was no getting them, you know, let him go anywhere near the actual tickets going in the envelopes. That was a disaster waiting to happen. My mother's a big volunteer at the church. I think there's a lot of old Catholic ladies that volunteer at the church and count many. That seems to be a popular thing to do. Yeah, yeah. And then they drive away in their Cadillacs. I see what's going on. No, I wouldn't go that far, but that's a huge, I think senior citizens volunteer more than you'd think. They do.

2:54.8

And I think that unfortunately often they, you know, are. It leads to trouble.
