I don't often see other black people out here in the mountains of rural North Carolina where I live.

So with that in mind, one day I'm driving down the road, a country road that's off a country

dressed in red track suits walking just off the side of the road.

And I put on brakes, and I back up because I need to find out what's going on.

So I stopped, and they approached smiling confidently and introduced themselves as proud members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, an organization of college-educated women

committed to the constructive development of its members

into public service with a primary focus on the black community,

just out on a walk.

And I know instantly, it's not not right something is wrong in the universe

was there a black meeting I didn't hear about or these sisters just lost

early voluntary social organizations were fundamental in building networks and connections

between black Americans, especially among social economic peer groups.
