Maori culture is part of the fabric of the nation of New Zealand

and refers to those whose ancestry is linked directly to those first inhabitants of New Zealand.

The Polynesian settlers who landed on the islands seven to

800 years ago. Their initial isolation from the rest of the world helped them to develop

their own cultural identity, spirituality, language and art. The Maori were a collection of tribes with high regard for the

sanctity of the tribe and a strong attitude towards warfare against other tribes. Today the

Maori are attempting to live in a land where European explorers have taken control and confiscated

Maori land. There is a struggle to this day between the Crown of New Zealand and the
