It's time to meet one of history's most notorious madmen on 30 Morbid Minutes. This is the podcast where we investigate topics, people, places, and history of a morbid macab, dark, and downright grisly nature.

It's sort of an exploration of human nature,

if you will. I'm Elise Willems. And I'm Jessica Vassami. In 1462, Ottoman Sultan Mehmed 2,

aka Mehmed the Conqueror, marched on the Wallachian capital of Taragovishde, hell-bent on annexing

the land for his empire with an army of almost 90,000 soldiers in tow.

His opposition? Vlad Seppesh, a.k. Vlad the impaler, the ruler in Voivode of Wallachia at the time.

Vlad had angered the Sultan after he refused to pay taxes to the Ottoman Empire, as was customary from the Ottoman's non-Muslim

neighbors. Oh, and Vlad had also decapitated and impaled the tax envoy sent to claim the payment,

so that might have had something to do with it, too.

Sure, the Sultan had an impressive military might, but Vlad wasn't about to lay down and die.

He raised his own militia of

30,000, and started a defense attack on the oncoming Ottomans, cutting off their resources,

and launching guerrilla raids. Vlad even infiltrated the Ottoman camp using his upbringing

in the Ottoman Empire to disguise himself as a Turk and gather intel. Very sneaky.
