Today we're going to talk about the immune benefits of vitamin C. Vitamin C does a lot of different things for your health, but it's immune benefits are really amazing.

Vitamin C deficiencies are actually a very common problem. You can have what's called a subclinical vitamin C deficiency, where you're not completely deficient, but you're deficient enough to have a weakened immune system. Vitamin C is a water-soluble nutrient. This means that unless you're constantly getting vitamin C, you could become deficient very quickly.

Vitamin C is a very powerful antioxidant. Free-radicals can damage certain things in the body. Vitamin C can help counter free-radical damage.

Immune benefits of vitamin C:

1. Enhanced antibodies

2. Increased neutrophil motility

3. Enhanced B-cells (increases antibodies)

4. Enhanced T-cells (helps fight pathogens)

5. Increased interferon (kills infected cells)

A vitamin C deficiency can make you more susceptible to certain infections. If you're very deficient in vitamin C, you can develop scurvy. Scurvy can increase susceptibility to fatal infections like pneumonia. Scurvy is often followed by infectious epidemics because infections increase the need for vitamin C. If you're using your immune system more, you can deplete your vitamin C reserves.

Welcome to the Dr. Berg's Healthy Keto and Interminute Fasting Podcast, where Dr. Berg takes you on the journey for the truth about getting healthy and losing healthy weight. Let's talk about the immune benefits of vitamin C. Now, vitamin C does a lot of

0:48.7

different things, but its influence on your immune system is quite amazing. Let's talk about it. Now, vitamin C deficiencies are

0:56.8

actually very common. You can have what's called a subclinical vitamin C deficiency where you're not

1:03.6

majorly deficient, but you're just deficient enough to cause a weakness within the immune system.

1:09.4

I'm going to talk more about that.

1:19.3

Vitamin C is a water-sliable nutrient, so it has a low storage capacity. So unless you're constantly getting vitamin C, you can be deficient within weeks. Vitamin C is a very powerful

1:25.1

antioxidant. So when you have free radicals, which are basically

1:30.7

molecules with unpaired electrons, so you're supposed to have two to balance it out. Let's say you just have one,

1:36.7

and it becomes a free radical. So it can damage certain things in the body. Vitamin C comes in there

1:42.8

and donates an electron to stabilize the molecule.

1:47.1

So it can actually help counter free radical damage. All right, as far as immune benefits,

1:54.5

it can enhance antibodies. Antibodies are proteins that fight pathogens, microbes that shouldn't be in your body.

2:03.6

Also, it will increase neutrophil motility.

2:07.5

Neutrophils are a type of white blood cell. It's like a phagocyte that cleans things up.

2:13.6

It engulfs and kills certain microbes, and it speeds up the motility of these little guys right here.

2:21.2

Number three, it enhances your B cells or B lymphocytes. It's a type of white blood cell, which then increases antibodies.

2:29.7

You've already mentioned that right here. Number four, it enhances the T cells, another type of lymphocyte that

2:35.6

helps you fight off infection. Number five, it can increase interferon. Now, interferon is a hormone

2:44.3

that kills infected cells and their surrounding neighbors. So it is a very powerful immune compound that our bodies make.
