thirst, is a truly beautiful, really expansive and important new book from journalist and

anthropologist Virginia Mendoza. Part memoir, part history, Virginia Weaves's personal reflection

and her memories of growing up in La Mancha, the driest

region in Europe, with a meticulously researched anthropological exploration of how water,

both too little and too much of the wet stuff, has shaped our species.

A little heads up, that English isn't Virginia's first language, obviously, and so I'm talking

a bit slower than you're maybe used to hearing me, and Virginia pronounces drought, dross,

the first couple of times she says it. It was a real joy to chat with her about water and about

how it connects us to our oldest of ancestors, from where we were all born in

Africa, to migration, to myth-making and religion. Her book has been translated into English by

Thomas Bunsted, is published by Pushkin and is out now, and it is truly a masterclass in making

the personal, not just political, but historical.
