I'm Hello and welcome to the history of Vikings.

Alquin of York was an Anglo-Saxon scholar, who is famous for recounting the first major Viking raid at Lindisfarne Monastery in 793.

In this account, Alquin sees the Scandinavian incursion in apocalyptic terms, understanding the Vikings as God's

punishment for mankind's sin. No more than six years after this infamous Viking raid,

Elquin describes another attack, this time, off the western coast of Charlemagne's Frankish Empire.

Pagan ships have done much damage to the islands off Aquitaine. Some of them were destroyed,

and about 105 pirates were killed on the beach. Alquin's account of pagan ships along the western Frankish coast has traditionally

been understood as the first Viking raid in the Frankish Empire. From Ragnar Lothbrock and the

siege of Paris in 845, to the differences between a Frankish warrior and a Viking warrior, today we'll be

discussing all things related to Vikings in the Frankish Empire.
