become a mover and shaker in Chinese real estate. We start, though, with one of the worst

kept secrets in European financial markets. Deutsche Bank and Commerz Bank are discussing a merger.

The two lenders confirmed over the weekend that they're in talks, more than the week after

Reuters first reported it and after months,

if not years of speculation. Marrying rival banks often brings big benefits and returns to shareholders,

usually by laying off thousands of employees and cutting other costs. But these once formidable

institutions are now in such a beleaguered state that even throwing them together might not help.
