Alex Last and today we go back to January 1968 and a turning point for American

involvement in the Vietnam War.

When during the Vietnamese New Year holiday of Tet, North Vietnamese troops and Viet Cong

guerrillas launched a surprise offensive in towns and cities across South Vietnam, including the capital, Saigon.

I was fast asleep in my room in my hotel and Saigon and the telephone rings and it's my

cameraman who is in another hotel which was close at the presidential palace in Saigon

saying there's a big firefight going on just outside.

I think you better get round here. I did get to meet my cameraman eventually and we managed to take up position just outside the back gates of the presidential palace.

The Americans tell us they're winning the war.

Well here we are, we're right in the center of Saigon.

In fact, just opposite the presidential palace.

And I am in the driveway of the Republic of South Korean embassy.

This gunfire that you can hear is pretty close.
