Summary

Romans 9:21-23 says, "Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use? What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, in order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory..."

RC Sproul, a notable Calvinist, interprets this to mean that God creates some people for salvation and the rest for damnation, but is that what the Apostle Paul really had in mind? Let's explore!

0:00.0	Hello and welcome back to Sociology 101, where we're continuing to travel through R.C. Sproles' exposition, if you can call it that, of Romans chapter 9.
0:19.7	I know that kind of sounded mean but those have
0:22.1	been following along in the in the broadcast through the series of going through
0:27.1	R.C. Sproul's what he calls an exposition of an expositional commentary of Romans 9 know what I'm
0:33.6	talking about when I when I say a so-called exposition because it is mostly a polemic against
0:38.9	Armenianism. Very little of it is actually pulling from the text what Paul is talking about.
0:44.3	And I think even some reform scholars would agree with me on that assessment. I don't think it's
0:49.5	just because I disagree with his Calvinism that that's the case. It's just the way in which
0:53.7	R.C. unfortunately, is dealing with the text in this particularism, that that's the case. It's just the way in which R.C.
0:54.3	Unfortunately, is dealing with the text in this particular situation, and that's something I think
0:58.7	we should draw out while still showing respect to R.C. Scroll, pointing out his inconsistencies
1:03.1	and his errors is perfectly within the purview of good Christian discussion and debate.
1:08.7	And so we want to model how to do that properly with respect to somebody while at the same time standing firmly against something that they say that may be an error.
1:15.6	I hope that we illustrate and demonstrate that on a regular basis here at Sotriology 101.
1:21.6	Now, one of the reasons I wanted to continue to go through this particular study is because he gets the Vessels of Rath and Mercy here,
1:29.5	which is a big controversial topic. Because when you talk about Vessels of Rath and Mercy, that seems to, in that diametrical way of thinking,
1:38.2	you know, that either you're elect or you're not elect, either you're chosen or you're reprobate, the vessels of wrath and
1:45.1	mercy fit right into that contextual way of understanding theistic determinism, i.e. Calvinism,
1:51.4	and therefore, Romans 9 is one of the biggest proof text for Calvinistic think in the way they
1:58.1	think about salvation. There are vessels of wrath and vessels of mercy. You're
2:02.0	either created for wrath or you're created for mercy. You're either a vessel shape and molded for
2:06.9	election and salvation, or you're a vessel shaped and molded for reprobation and unbelief and
