Summary

Ravi dives into the news of the day, from the aftermath of the Trump verdict and Biden’s asylum ban at the US-Mexico border to what Mexico’s recent elections say about the rise of authoritarianism in the country. He then gives an update on Amanda Knox’s latest legal challenge and explains why more people should care about the lack of air conditioning in U.S. prisons. Finally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will keep power for a third term after India’s election results were released this week. Ravi welcomes Princeton professor and India policy expert Ashoka Mody to the pod to dissect the results and explore how the country’s challenges with unemployment, the economy, and a broken judicial system impacted the election. They then discuss the disconnect between the Western hype over India’s progress and the reality on the ground, why India must address systemic issues like corruption and environmental degradation, and what Modi’s complicated win and impending third term says about the state of the world’s largest democracy. Welcome to The Lost Debate, a show for Politically Ecclectics.

I'm Robbie Gupta and we've got an exciting episode today in a little while.

0:07.9

I'm going to be bringing on one of my favorite, if not my favorite experts on India to talk about the seismic election results coming out of there.

0:16.5

But before we get there, I've got a whole bunch of stuff in my notebook that I want to unload,

0:21.5

mostly breaking news.

0:22.7

Let's start with this Trump prosecution, obviously, the last time.

0:26.2

We spoke.

0:27.4

The verdict had just come down.

0:28.8

And now we have a little bit of information about what this aftermath is going to look like.

0:33.5

Most notably, I would say, this poll that just came out from the New York Times, they had an

0:40.5

interview of 2,000 people in the New York Times, Sienna College survey, which is gold standard among

0:45.5

pollsters, one of the highest performing polls out there. They basically went back and re-interviewed

0:51.5

people that were part of a certain data set and said, well, okay,

0:54.4

is this verdict going to change your mind? And it was a modest change. Essentially, Trump was

1:00.5

up by three points the last time they did this survey. Same people, which is notable. And now

1:06.9

he's up by one. Now, you could be listening to this and say, well, that is meaningless and margin of air and yada, yada, yada.

1:16.1

Marjan of air doesn't work exactly the same way here because they're polling the same people, but I'll put that aside.

1:21.2

This is what the New York Times has to say about this.

1:23.9

They said, in a close election, losing 7% of your supporters can be decisive. In recent polls, Mr. Biden

1:29.3

either leads or is within two points of Mr. Trump in states and districts worth 270 electoral votes

1:35.9

required to win the presidency. Potential crucial sliver of Mr. Trump's former supporters,

1:40.3

3% now told us they'll back Mr. Biden. And another 4% said they're now undecided. So that's where they get the 7% from. They went on to say the shift was especially pronounced among young, non-white, and disengaged Democratic-leaning voters who have propelled Mr. Trump to a lead in the early polls. Of the people who previously told us they had voted for Mr. Biden in 2020, but would vote for Mr. Trump in 2024. About one
