Summary

Hunter Biden was convicted on all three counts in his federal gun trial this week. Ravi takes stock of the verdict and President Biden’s response before diving into the secret recordings of Supreme Court Justices Alito and Roberts, the new partnership between OpenAI and Apple, why to pay attention to foreign political interference in Canada, and what’s behind Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s increased unpopularity. Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar says civilian casualties are “necessary sacrifices” and a new op-ed in the Wall Street Journal accuses the International Criminal Court of “brazen” anti-Israel bias. Ravi shares his take on both developments before welcoming Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib, a U.S. citizen from Gaza, and Michael Bauer, an Israeli, to the show to discuss their perspectives about the current state of the war and the response abroad. Ravi and Ahmed discuss the potential for a ceasefire and the challenges of negotiating with Hamas, the reasons the American left can’t agree on how – or if – to criticize Hamas, and why the pro-Palestine movement would benefit from a greater diversity of thought. Michael, who lives on a kibbutz near the Gaza Strip, shares his experience on October 7 and then talks with Ravi about the potential for a short-term solution to the war and a long-term resolution to the broader conflict and how the war has impacted the political landscape in Israel. I'm Ravi Gupta and super excited about this episode today.

I have an Israeli and a Gazen on this show today in two different interviews.

And so you're going to get a sense of two very different perspectives on the conflict, but actually, I think you'll come away finding more common ground than you would suspect on the

0:22.8

surface.

0:23.7

But before we get there, there is a lot of news out there.

0:26.8

Let's start with this Hunter Biden story.

0:29.0

So just right before I sat down to record, Hunter Biden was found guilty of falsely claiming

0:34.5

to be drug-free when applying to buy a handgun six years ago.

0:38.1

He was convicted of three counts by a federal jury, which deliberated for about three hours, over two days.

0:44.2

The jury found that Hunter bought a 38-calibur cold cobra revolver in October 2018.

0:49.8

He lied on a federal form by checking a box to say he wasn't addicted to or using drugs at the time.

0:56.0

And the trial went on for about a week.

0:59.7

Jurors heard about his struggle to stay sober, including evidence that he bought and used

1:04.5

drugs in the weeks before and the days after he purchased the gun.

1:08.6

He faces up to 25 years behind bars, although it is unlikely he'll get

1:13.5

anything close to that. He'll probably get a fraction of that. President Biden has said he would

1:18.1

not pardon his son and otherwise stood by him issuing a statement he was proud of the man

1:23.7

Hunter Biden is now. And so this comes after the collapse of an agreement in which Hunter's

1:29.2

team have been set to plead guilty on a pair of misdemeanor tax charges to avoid prosecution.

1:34.9

That plea deal fell apart. I would say in some confusing fashion that we covered on the show.

Attorney General Garland then conferred a special counsel status to David
