President Donald Trump is holding a meeting at the White House about next steps on Venezuela.

That's what sources familiar with the matter tells CNN.

The U.S. is not officially at war with Venezuela, but it has increased pressure on the country with strikes

on alleged drug boats and has deployed dozens of U.S. military assets in the Caribbean.

Lawmakers from both parties questioned whether the military is overstepping its authority.

They say they're looking into reports that the U.S. carried out a follow-up strike that killed

survivors on a suspected drug boat after

the first strike didn't kill everyone on board. White House press secretary Caroline Levitt

defended the official who ordered that follow-up strike, saying he was acting, quote,

well within his authority, but declined to say what threat the survivors posed to justify a second

strike. On Sunday, Trump told reporters that he personally wouldn't have wanted a second strike.

The third winter storm in a week is dumping snow on parts of the central U.S.

It's also expected to deliver the first widespread snow of the season to the
