Hey there from CNN. I'm David Rind with the five things you need to know for Tuesday, January 6th.

Let's start with what's going on in Venezuela, where things remain on edge. Gunfire and anti-aircraft fire

were seen over Caracas overnight following the capture of the leader of President Nicholas Maduro.

Although a Venezuelan ministry spokesperson did say that, quote,

no confrontation occurred.

And as Venezuelans grapple with uncertainty,

Trump administration officials are set to brief lawmakers

on the Venezuelan operation behind closed doors.

Here's CNN's Elena Trine with more on the administration's next steps.

Essentially, this idea of prioritizing administrative stability right now over what others thought would be an immediate push for a democratic process in Venezuela.

They're not calling for elections right away. For now, they are relying on some of the conversations and pressure that they are putting on Venezuela as now newly sworn in president.

Meanwhile, Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Karina Machado has vowed to return home, quote,

as soon as possible. Trump has downplayed the idea that she could be installed as leader,

while senior White House aide Stephen Miller called the suggestion absurd.
