Summary

On this podcast episode, I discuss vardenafil pharmacology, adverse effects, drug interactions, and much more.

Vardenafil is a PDE-5 inhibitor used primarily for erectile dysfunction in males.

Using nitrates with vardenafil is contraindicated due to the risk of profound hypotension.

I have discussed how long to wait between vardenafil and nitrates in a previous post on Meded101.com.

1:02.9

Lvivra is the brand name here.

1:06.1

Mechanistically, how does this medication work?

1:09.6

So with the process of male sexual stimulation, nitric oxide plays an important role.

1:20.4

And this nitric oxide release activates guanolite cyclase to increase cyclic gmp.

1:29.4

So cyclic gmp is an important mediator in helping to create the male erection.

1:37.6

So what Vardinifil does is preserves cyclic gmp by inhibiting phosphodiasterase 5.

1:49.7

Okay, so this is basically an enzyme that breaks down cyclic gmp.

1:54.1

So by blocking PDE5, we're increasing the amount of cyclic gmp, which helps with erection and things

2:04.1

of that nature. So that's how the drug primarily works and helps with erectile dysfunction.
