Hello from CNN. I'm Joe Beck, with the five things you need to know for Friday, February 14th.

Vice President J.D. Vance is meeting with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.

It comes as Vance told the Wall Street Journal yesterday that the U.S. could send troops to Ukraine

and hit Russia with further sanctions if it doesn't negotiate a peace deal in good faith.

That's a very different tone to what President Donald Trump's been saying.

He spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this week and suggested that Ukraine

may or may not be part of Russia someday.

And Trump repeated his claim that Russia's invasion of Ukraine was prompted by Kiev wanting to join

NATO, reasoning that parrots Moscow's rationale.

I actually think that that was the thing that caused the start of the war.

And Biden said it and Zelensky said it.

And I think that was one of the reasons. Trump is doubling down on his plan for reciprocal tariffs, even as inflation is heating up.

Yesterday, he ordered agencies to investigate plans for new tariffs that could boost

America's revenue, and then he'll decide which ones to go through with.

Tip-for-tat tariffs were one of Trump's core campaign pledges, as he tries to even the score

with countries who tax U.S. goods.

And he says it'll lead to more American jobs.
