Hi, from CNN. This is Madeline Thompson with five things you need to know for Thursday, February 13th.

President Donald Trump announced sweeping new tariffs this afternoon, sort of.

CNN's Elizabeth Buckwold explains.

Hi, Madeline.

President Trump paved the way for some pretty hefty tariffs to take effect, but they are not

going to be taking effect just yet because what he did today is order an investigation into other nations tax and tariff policies to level the playing field with the U.S. to hit them back with reciprocal tariffs.

One of the nations that he singled out was India saying that they charge more tariffs than any other country.

And this comes just right before President Trump is scheduled to meet with India's

prime minister.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at the White House this afternoon after

meeting earlier today with Trump's national security advisor Mike Waltz, Elon Musk, and Vivek

Ramoswamy.

The acting U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York has resigned after being

directed to drop corruption charges against New York City's mayor earlier this week.

Danielle Sassoon was prosecuting Mayor Eric Adams for five criminal counts, including conspiracy

to commit wire fraud and bribery,

before the Justice Department pressured her to drop the case.
