I love the flexibility of walking. I was reminded of that recently by something I saw, which

got me thinking. I'll unspool that during today's 10-minute walk. Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to

Walking as Fitness. This is a podcast that encourages and provides a little extra motivation to help

you create and sustain a habit of walking.

We'll get started with today's 10 minute walk in just a moment.

I am walking near the fire station, which is the closest firehouse to where we live.

And you've probably at times, I guess it could even happen while we're walking together now,

you've probably at times if you've been listening to this podcast, heard the sirens

as a fire truck is heading off to respond to an

emergency. I have a couple of friends who were firefighters. They're retired now, not active

firefighters, although I believe one still goes to the firehouse on a regular basis.

We were vacationing together.

This was probably about a handful of years ago in the Outer Banks.

We were on the back deck of the home that we rented for the week,

and we noticed smoke, ominous smoke, off in the distance.

And they were curious, I was curious.

So we got in the car and drove towards the smoke and there was a building on fire.

And it was a pretty dramatic fire. I can tell you right now, no one was injured.

So it was only structural damage.

But it was, this building, which was a large building, was fully engulfed in flames.

We weren't the only ones there watching.

But it was interesting because my friends could give me sort of a play-by-play on what was happening.
