But right now we start with the U.S. and its insistence that it is defensive and reactive to world conduct, not aggressive, not expansionist. Gregory, to everyone outside the United States, it is routine to refer to the American aggressor,

the American military, the American empire. Inside the United States, however, there's this phenomenon where

we regard ourselves as only reacting to emergencies, rescuing peoples who are beleaguered by tyrants.
